When a company is preparing for a major corporate milestone, communicating its plans effectively can help it reach investors, customers and the wider business community. But getting the story right is only part of the challenge. The announcement must also reach the publications and audiences that matter.
Over three months, Evaluate Media handled public relations for Wisdom Kwati Smart City Plc and its Chairman, Mr Wisdom Kwati, across three key developments: the company’s plans for a Nigerian Exchange (NGX) listing, the inauguration of its Abuja headquarters and the international distribution of a story about Kwati AI.
The engagement involved preparing corporate announcements for the media, coordinating press coverage around a major event and adapting information about a technology platform for a wider audience. Here is how the campaign unfolded and what other businesses can learn from it.
One campaign, three different audiences
Each milestone required a different communications approach.
The planned listing called for coverage that could reach the business press and readers interested in corporate growth. The Abuja headquarters inauguration provided an opportunity to communicate the group’s expansion plans and the transition of Wisdom Kwati Smart City to a public limited company. Kwati AI, meanwhile, presented an opportunity to introduce the group’s technology ambitions to international audiences.
The challenge was to communicate these developments clearly while keeping the wider corporate story consistent.
Building visibility around the NGX listing plans
Wisdom Kwati Smart City Plc appointed APT Securities and Funds Limited as lead issuing house ahead of its planned listing on the Nigerian Exchange.
For Evaluate Media, the task was to present the development in a format that business journalists and their readers could readily understand, explaining the corporate milestone and its relevance to the company’s plans.
This was followed by media communication around Usulo City, the company’s proposed ₦500 billion wellness and resort city in Kuje, Abuja.
The development received coverage in The Guardian, THISDAY and The Nation, bringing the project to the attention of readers across three national newspaper platforms.
For a company seeking to expand its public profile ahead of a proposed listing, coverage of its corporate plans and development projects provides an additional channel for communicating with potential investors, prospective buyers and other stakeholders.
Coordinating coverage for the Abuja headquarters launch
Corporate events create opportunities to communicate directly with the media, but the work begins well before the event itself.
Ahead of the inauguration of Wisdom Kwati Group’s Abuja headquarters, Evaluate Media coordinated press engagement and confirmed attendance from national publications, including THISDAY, The Nation, Vanguard, The Guardian, Leadership, Daily Trust and Tribune.
The event provided the setting for the group to present its long-term business ambitions, including a target of $100 billion in revenue by 2036 and plans to pursue listings on the NGX and the London Stock Exchange.
Within 48 hours, reports on the group’s plans appeared in BusinessDay, THISDAY, The Nation, Leadership, The Sun and Independent, among other publications.
The speed of publication was an important part of the campaign. By preparing the media engagement ahead of the event and responding quickly once the announcements were made, Evaluate Media helped extend the reach of the news while the event was still current.
For businesses planning launches, product announcements or corporate milestones, this illustrates the value of treating media coordination as part of event planning rather than as an afterthought.
Taking Kwati AI beyond Nigeria
The third assignment required a different approach.
Kwati AI is developing an AI-native enterprise resource planning platform designed to bring business workflows, data, automation and decision-making into a more integrated environment.
The starting material for the announcement was an investor pitch deck. While such documents are useful for explaining a business to potential investors, they are not necessarily structured for a general audience or a newsroom.
Evaluate Media reworked the material into a news-style announcement that introduced the platform, explained the problem it was designed to address and outlined its intended applications.
The announcement was distributed through international newswire partners and appeared on 1,175 online platforms worldwide, including Barchart and ABNewswire.
This gave Kwati AI exposure beyond Nigeria and created a wider online footprint for information about the platform. It also demonstrated how material originally prepared for investors can be adapted into a format suitable for broader communication.
The distinction is important: international distribution increases the number of platforms carrying an announcement, while the nature and depth of editorial attention can vary from one publication to another.
What made the campaign work
Three elements shaped the approach.
1. Starting with the news
A corporate announcement needs a clear reason for publication. A major appointment, a project launch, a corporate transition or a technology development provides a stronger starting point than general claims about a company.
For each assignment, the focus was on identifying the central development and presenting it in a format that journalists and readers could understand without needing to be familiar with the business.
2. Preparing before the announcement
Media engagement is more effective when it begins before an event or corporate milestone. Identifying relevant publications, preparing materials and coordinating press attendance in advance can help reduce delays when the news breaks.
The Abuja launch demonstrated the importance of this preparation, with coverage appearing across multiple national outlets within 48 hours.
3. Matching distribution to the audience
Not every announcement needs the same distribution strategy. A corporate development may be most relevant to Nigerian business publications, while a technology story may benefit from wider international distribution.
Understanding the intended audience helps determine how a story should be written, which media channels are appropriate and how its results should be assessed.
What other businesses can learn
The work with Wisdom Kwati Smart City Plc offers four practical lessons for businesses planning their own communications.
Identify the news before writing. A concrete development, decision, milestone or announcement gives a story a clear focus. Begin with what has happened and why it matters to the intended audience.
Plan media engagement early. Press coordination should form part of the event plan. Relevant publications need to be identified, materials prepared and invitations sent ahead of time.
Look beyond press releases. Investor presentations, project briefs and corporate documents can contain useful information for wider audiences. The task is to identify what is genuinely newsworthy and present it in an accessible format.
Measure the right outcomes. Publication numbers, audience reach, referral traffic, brand searches and meaningful enquiries measure different aspects of a PR campaign. Tracking the appropriate indicators provides a clearer picture of what the work has achieved than counting mentions alone.
A successful campaign is not defined by distribution figures alone. The quality of the story, the relevance of the publications and the outcomes that follow all matter.
